Symptoms of a Yeast Infection - Are You Infested With Yeast?

A moist environment is optimum for yeast to grow. Anywhere where skin folds or is naturally moist can be susceptible to yeast infections. Areas more prone are the mouth, arm pits, and in the genital area. Obesity can breed infections where skin folds occur. Under breasts is another area where yeast infection can happen. Symptoms of a yeast infection can include the following: reddening in the area infected, soreness, discomfort, a white almost cottage cheese-like substance, and in some cases blistering. Often symptoms are not noticed or just slightly uncomfortable.

Yeast, is common on the skin and in the mucous membranes of mammals. It is a fungus, Canidida albicans and is found in the genital area, the gastrointestinal tract, the mouth and other areas. In a healthy body yeast is kept in check by bacteria. Yet, if an imbalance occurs yeast can increase and cause infection.

Increased yeast and infection are due to common causes that spur increased growth which often have to do with decreased health conditions such as having diabetes, heavy stress that lowers immunity, obesity, and having human immunodeficiency virus. Being on antibiotics also increases the risk for a yeast infection as the drugs decrease the necessary bacteria that keeps normal yeast levels in check.

In both older adults and younger children yeast in the mouth can occur. Oral yeast infection or Thrush symptoms show up as a reddish base topped with a white curd-like spot. These can be found on anywhere on the fleshy parts of the mouth. Adults can have yeast around their dentures.

Infections can occur internally, and are more likely if the immune system has been compromised. The symptoms for an internal infection causes pain, ulceration, and may affect the function of internal organs.

Canidida infections of the esophagus often occur in people who have HIV or AIDS. While it can appear similar to the oral infection, Thrush, esophageal infection travels down the esophagus and can even affect the stomach and reach the gastrointestinal tract. These infections may cause enough pain from ulcerations that a person may be hesitant to eat or drink water leading to dehydration and undernourishment. If the infection gets to the intestines it may retard the absorption of nutrients leading to malnourishment. People with suppressed immune systems need to take any symptom of a yeast infection seriously.

While women are generally associated with genital yeast infections, men too can experience the effects. Transmitted through sex men's symptoms are redness at the glan area of the penis and soreness, with discharge and blistering. Women also have a white discharge often compared to a cottage cheese-like consistency, itching, redness and pain in both urination and during sex. The infection can spread to the vulva causing redness and swelling.

Being mammals, our dogs and cats too can acquire a yeast infection. They can experience infection in their ears, nose, mouth, skin, genitals and their GI tract. Symptoms of GI tract infection can disrupt food digestion and elimination. Sometimes the pet will become less alert, more lethargic. If the mouth is affected the animal will drool excessively. Skin will be irritated and red and could also have open sores. Infection in the ears will cause the animal to shake its head often. Other symptoms are an increased temperature and an odor could present itself.

While the body can naturally handle yeast it needs to have the right balance with bacteria to maintain health. Changes some quite small can upset this fragile equilibrium. Most topical infections are easily treated. Internal infections may need more aggressive treatments. Anyone who has an impairment of their immune system should have any symptoms of a yeast infection looked at by a physician.
